What is Counselling?
Counselling is a process of building a trusting relationship where you can bring your concerns, fears and issues, to a confidential space. It's a place where you can be heard, and hear yourself, and really seek understanding, support and insight. Different clients want different outcomes, which can be clarified within the session, however put simply I like my clients to feel that their lives progress, get better, more fulfilling and that they feel more resourced to lead their lives.
How can counselling help?
Counselling helps by giving you a safe place to really be able to talk. Often in our lives we can feel defensive and frightened to say all of what we want to say because of potential consequences.
Counselling gives you a space to say and be how you feel, which allows you to really see all the aspects that contribute to a situation.
The relationship with the counsellor is critical, so it’s good to find someone who really fits with what you need. Trust and authenticity are key skills for a counsellor, because often people don't always know what to think and feel. Working with someone who is honest, experienced and knowledgeable can help you to work out what is right for you. It also gives you a space to share your feelings, understand yourself and those around you more clearly.
Ultimately counselling can help you go back into your life and be in it more confidently and clearly, and more able to achieve your goals.
What is EMDR?
EMDR is not a talking therapy. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of traumatic life experiences, these can be huge life-altering events or a small day to day occurrence, that you may not consciously remember, but your subconscious is holding on to.
Repeated studies show that by using EMDR therapy, clients can experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference. It is widely assumed that severe emotional pain requires a long time to heal, however, this isn't necessarily the case.
EMDR therapy shows that the mind can in fact heal from psychological trauma, much as the body recovers from physical trauma. When you cut your hand, your body works to close the wound. If a foreign object or repeated injury irritates the wound, it festers and causes pain. Once the block is removed, healing resumes. EMDR therapy demonstrates that a similar sequence of events occurs with mental processes. The brain’s information processing system naturally moves toward mental health. If the system is blocked or imbalanced by the impact of a disturbing event, the emotional wound festers and can cause intense suffering. Once the block is removed, healing resumes.
EMDR is recognised by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) as a treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and the World Health Organisation (WHO), which also recognises it as an effective treatment for children.
